The rule of thumb when buying walking boots is that you should be able to fit a good finger width (1/2 inch) between the back of your leg and the shoe. Your footwear should not slide at all and there should be a bit of wiggle room at the front of the shoe for your toes.
Innovation and tradition share equally deep roots at SCARPA, which to this day remains a family owned company with its headquarters and performance footwear manufacturing facilities in the same regions of northern Italy where it got its start in 1938.
How are boots supposed to fit? Boots should not be too loose or too tight on your foot. The best fit should be snug (but not tight) around the whole of your foot, with enough room to move your toes and a maximum of a quarter to a half-inch of slippage at the heel.
Scarpa are known for being narrow, surely! Scarpa make the Ranger as a wide fitting for this reason. Certainly, in my experience, they are narrower than Salomon (which are always small for the size, so I'm comparing with similar lengths) and then Meindl are generally the widest.
Bigger is usually better
Feet tend to swell a bit during hiking, so erring on the side of larger hiking shoes or boots is advisable. In general, aim to buy your hiking boots a half size larger than you think you need.
In a properly fitting boot, they should be able to get roughly one finger between your heel and the back of the boot. If they get significantly more or less than that, the boot is too large or small. (Note that you can't check this yourself; your foot and heel lift forward when you bend over.)

With a proper fit, your heel should be locked in place inside the boot to prevent friction and the blisters it engenders; your toes shouldn't hit the front of the boot while going downhill (the number one cause of blackened toenails); and there should be minimal extra space around your foot, though you should have ...
Tighten the straps so they are snug but not too tight. The boot should limit movement but not cut off your blood flow. If your boot has one or more air chambers, pump them up as directed by your healthcare provider.
However, wearing two socks can help. The inner sock helps reduce friction with your foot. There is still friction occurring – it is just between the two pairs of socks and not your skin and the sock. The inner sock also helps wick away moisture from the foot.
Like La Sportiva above, Scarpa is a climbing company at its core, and they also excel in the skiing and mountaineering markets. But the Italian brand's hiking and trail running collections are nothing to scoff at.

Your feet should have room, but not too much room
First, the toe box of the shoe should be spacious enough that your toes have plenty of wiggle room, but not too much. As a rule of thumb, make sure there's about half an inch of space between your big toe and the front of the shoe.
Shoes that are too small can make your feet tilt forward or to the side. A boot that's too large will often make your heel lift up as you walk. Heel slippage is something you definitely want to avoid, as it can result in overpronation, plantar fasciitis, and other painful foot conditions.
After trying on the hiking boots, roll your foot forward and backward from your heel to your toe. This action mimics the movement that your feet make when you're actually hiking. If your foot seems to slip up and down while you do this, it signifies that the boots are too big.
As a rule of thumb (or toe), you should have about 3/8″ to 1/2″ of room from the tip of your longest toe to the end of the shoe. Your big toe is not automatically your longest toe. Pick the shoes that match your foot shape.
